A team of scientists from the University of Warwick led by Mark Hollands has found an ultramassive white dwarf known as WDJ0551+4135, with an unusual carbon-rich atmosphere that was never witnessed before. The scientists have ruled that the star situated about 150 light-years from Earth and is the result of a merger between two-parent white dwarfs which have nearly escaped destruction. Scientists are excited about the findings as it is the first time when the origins of such a merged white dwarf have been figured out by the composition of its atmosphere and other important factors.
