Scientists from Imperial College London have discovered a new technique that could be effective in reducing carbon emissions. To produce chemicals , plastics , fibres etc fossil fuels are the basic ingredients. These fossil fuels are usually mined and lead to harmfull carbon emissions. The answer lies in producing these chemicals using plants and fungi from atmospheric cardon dioxide. But this has a side effect which impacts these organisms themselves. Researchers observed that plants have a mechanism to make small modifications to these chemicals and store them harmlessly. Scientists have copied the same concept and used genetic engineering to program microorganisms to make these chemicals harmless. The technique of programmed microorganism will be helpful to reduce the need for fossil fuels to create chemicals, plastics, fibers, and fuels.
