NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is gearing up to collect a sample of ancient rock from asteroid Bennu. OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer) has already performed a series of drills in recent weeks which has brought it closer to asteroid’s surface. The latest drill called “Checkpoint” maneuver has brought the spacecraft to within 75 meters (246 ft) of Bennu’s surface. OSIRIS-REx is a long way away from Earth and will perform its sampling operation. OSIRIS-REx’s will attempt to take the first samples on August 25th, which will be sent to earth on 24 September 2023.
