A shrew is a small animal that resembles a mouse and gives birth to young ones. And thus, it falls under the category of mammals. Scientists and researchers however are still trying to gather more and more information about the newly found species. But the team has already discovered a lot about them. Crocidura Narcondamica is an insect-eating type and is a new staple to the mammals’ family. And has a medium-sized body, extremely dense fur, a dark and thick tail. So, these are the traits that set apart this particular species from the other of its genus. In addition to this, the other prominent features are about the rounded braincase with raised lambdoidal ridges. Now, the existing number of such species is 11 and the latest discovery has increased the number to 12.

Chandrakasan said that “This is the first discovery of a shrew from this volcanic island (Narcondam Island) and it increases the number of White-toothed shrew (genus Crocidura) species in India from 11 to 12”. And not just this, but the total number of mammals found in the country has increased from 429 to 430.
