Impacts Of Ocean Acidification On Oysters’ Memory

Researchers from the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences have revealed that adult Oysters exposure to ocean acidified conditions impacts their ability to pass on memories of harsh climatic conditions to their offspring. The study involved the two species of oysters namely Olympia oyster and the Pacific oyster. The study revealed that the offspring of the Olympia oyster adults whose parents were exposed to high temperatures and acidified conditions were relatively able to survive the extreme conditions. While the offspring of the adult Pacific oysters underwent a poorer survival rate than Olympia oysters. Researchers emphasize on more such research to understand the impact of climate change on oysters or other organisms.
