Co-inventor Of The Barcode Dies At 94

US engineer George J Laurer, who co-invented the barcode and brought the revolution in the retail industry in the 1970s, has died at age 94. The former IBM employee’s funeral was held on 9th December 2019 in his hometown of Wendell, North Carolina. Although, his fellow IBM employee, Norman Woodland is considered as the inventor of the barcode technology.  Woodland patented the idea in the 1950s but was unable to develop it. A few years later, Laurer invented a scanner that could read codes digitally.
