SpaceX’s Inspiration4 crew that recently completed the world’s first all-civilian space mission posted some striking images of Earth shot using a professional DSLR camera. But, now mission commander Jared Isaacman has shared another glorious image that was captured on his iPhone 12.
Apple is known for offering the best-in-class camera technology in its smartphones, so the excellent image quality provided by the phone’s camera from 575 km above the Earth’s surface shows surprising details.
More images expected in coming months
Isaacman snapped the picture through the all-glass dome fitted beneath the nose cone of the Crew Dragon spacecraft that was home to four people during their three-day mission. The nose cone opens up to offer panoramic views of our planet through the glass dome.
Isaacman also posted a video when the spacecraft flew over Brazil, which was also captured using his iPhone 12. In the coming days, the crew is expected to share more images and videos shot from space, offering earthlings more extraordinary views of Earth captured from a unique vantage point that’s even higher than the ISS.
During the Inspiration4 mission, the crew orbited around 100 miles further away from Earth than the ISS. Jared Isaacman said they captured around 700 images to share using the crew’s Nikon DSLR, so we can expect more striking images soon.
Six months of extensive training
To prepare for the once-in-a-lifetime trip to space, the four crewmembers spent six months that required them to perform extensive training that included all aspects of the mission, from take-off to landing, as well as team-building exercises that require climbing part of Mount Rainier in Washington.
Besides, SpaceX’s next trip to the International Space Station (ISS) is set for August 28, confirmed NASA. The announcement comes right after SpaceX rival Boeing failed to launch its Starliner. This will be NASA’s 23rd commercial resupply services mission, with SpaceX ready to send loads of supplies and scientific equipment to the space outpost.
