Yeast In A Woman’s Bladder Ferments Alcohol, Delays Liver Transplant

A 61-year-old woman has become the first person to be diagnosed with ‘urinary auto-brewery syndrome’, in which yeast in her bladder ferments sugar in her urine to produce alcohol. Initially, doctors suspected she might be hiding her alcohol addiction when her urine tests repeatedly tested positive for drugs. The woman went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian Hospital for the liver transplant. She has been put on the liver-transplant waitlist in previous hospitals because her urine repeatedly tested positive for alcohol. However, the researchers consider the woman’s case different from the previously registered cases of ‘auto-brewery syndrome’, in which yeast in the gut appears to produce alcohol that is absorbed into the bloodstream.
