A team of experts from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa School has recognized the world’s largest shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, which is hardly noticeable above the Pacific ocean. The volcano, Pūhāhonu, is positioned in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Scientists studied the ocean floor along the mostly submarine Hawaiian smooth volcano chain and examined rocks in the university’s collection.Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii had long been considered to be the world’s largest volcano, although experts now say Pūhāhonu holds this record.
