Why Do Some Frogs Evolve Extreme Heads?

Most of the frogs have a simple skull shape with a smooth surface, However, few of them evolved with some sport faux fangs, helmet-like fortifications, and even venom-delivering spikes. Now, to unlock the mystery of their evolution, researchers from the Florida Museum of Natural History used 3D data to study skull shape in 158 species serving all living frog families. The research team observed that complex patterns of radically shaped skulls have evolved more than 25 times in frogs. Whereas, species that pose similar feeding habits managed to exhibit similarly shaped and patterned skulls. The new study sheds light on frog skull shape, however, researchers believe more research is required to get detailed insights into the basic biology of frogs.
