On Monday, Nov. 11, a most unusual event will take place in the transit of the planet Mercury across the sun’s disk. Such a sight is a relatively rare occurrence as seen from Earth. The duration for the transit is a leisurely 5 hours, 28 minutes and 47 seconds. The event is well placed for South America and eastern North America, which will witness the transit in its entirety. This event will be the fourth of 14 transits of Mercury that will occur during the 21st century. This will be the last transit of Mercury visible from North America until 2049.
