Tiny Optical Cavity Could Help To Create A Quantum Network

Quantum computers give a hope to transform information technology this century and scientists across the world are also working hard to create the best network of these Quantum machines. Now, a team of quantum engineers from Caltech, the California Institute of Technology has shown that by embedding atoms of the rare-earth element ytterbium optical cavities, small boxes to hold light could be the foundation to the creation of a quantum internet. The newly developed system has the potential to share that information over thousands of kilometers using photons. Engineers are now planning to increase the performance and scale of this hardware so they can design new materials and build integrated tools.
