The traditional American coot, also recognized as the mud hen, is a common, grey and black, waterside bird, spotted in North America. However, coot’s offsprings embrace striking bright orange and red feathers, skin, and beaks. Now, a new study sheds light on how the bright coloring of coot chicks fits in with the reproductive approach of their less colorful parents. The study revealed that the bright colors of the chicks of American coots help their parents pick favorites, thus, giving the ornamented chicks a survival benefit. Scientists have been trying to figure out their reproductive behavior for over 20 years, and this is another interesting perspective of that.
