A robotic submarine is gearing up to dive into a dark, water-filled hole in Antarctica, to figure out why one of it’s largest glaciers ‘Thwaites Glacier’ is melting so quickly. The Thwaites Glacier covers more than 74,000 square miles and has lost around 595 billion tons of ice since the 1980s. The researchers have drilled a 2000 feet borehole to deploy a submarine robot. The Icefin robot is equipped with high-definition video cameras and will send back live pictures to the scientists so they can operate it throughout the mission. The robot will be recovered before the hole completely freezes. Researchers hope that this technology could be used to search for life in other ice-covered oceans in the solar system.
