A new study revealed that the Milky Way was a cannibal in its more initial years and has swallowed five smaller galaxies. Astrophysicist Duncan Forbes used globular clusters orbiting the Milky Way to reconstruct our cosmic neighborhood’s history. Forbes’ analyzed the clusters’ age, structure, spin and how much energy they consume in their orbits. When Forbes combined all the evidence, it helped him to create a picture of clusters originally “belonging” to the Milky Way galaxy. Galaxies may strike or consume other smaller galaxies, and Forbes has found enough evidence of this cosmic cannibalism happening in our galaxy.
