Somebody just paid $650,000 for a boat in the metaverse

Metaverse has been buzzing the web for quite some time now. In a new development, someone just spent over half a million on a yacht they’ll never be able to own physically. The amount paid for the NFT yacht was $650,000 in Ethereum.

The sale was made by metaverse and NFT developer Republic Realm for the metaverse platform called The Sandbox, first reported by Hyperbeast. The yacht named “The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht” sold for 149 ETH, making it the heftiest NFT asset on the platform to date.

The collection has other expensive NFTs

The yacht has a hideous blocky design and is made up of four stories featuring lounge areas, dance floor, DJ booth, hot tub, and two helipads. The helicopters for the helipads will be sold separately. The yacht belongs to Republic Realm’s “The Fantasy Collection,” a line of luxury NFTs developed for The Sandbox platform. The collection also includes speedboats, private islands, jet skis, and beach clubs if you have enough money.

While it seems pretty absurd to shell out so much money on things that do not exist in the real world, there are some upsides to it if you look hard enough. Since it’s all digital, there are no maintenance costs. Moreover, if someone is ready to pay half a million on an NFT, it’s probably an insignificant amount for that person.

Multimillion land acquisition in the metaverse

Recently, a blockchain investor called Tokens.com announced that it had purchased a virtual real estate lot, in what it says is the biggest metaverse land acquisition to date. The “land” purchased is located in a metaverse environment called Decentraland, in an area known as the “Fashion Street district,” and it cost 618,000 MANA, an Ethereum-based token used as a currency for the project.

That is equivalent to $2.4 million USD and totals 6,090 square feet of digital land. Neither Tokens.com nor Decentraland are big names compared to Facebook and Microsoft, both of which are working towards launching well-funded takes on a similar concept – and spending huge sums on a virtual environment.
