Soil Community in the Atacama Desert Survives on Sips of Fog

Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert in South America is home to some of the most severe climate habitats on earth. Due to severe weather conditions, people, plants and animals that live in this desert region are subject to huge temperature variations. However, scientists have now discovered a surprising amount of life happening in this unique desert region. They observed that Lichens, fungi, and algaes sit on top of the soil and ‘sip’ the moisture that comes in the form of fog. This newly found Atacama Desert soil community makes their homes atop the small stones that make up the Atacama, and can photosynthesize with less than half of the water that other desert communities with similar composition need to flourish.
