Scientists Revealed The Properties Of The Newest Carbon Allotrope

Scientists from the University of Girona, Spain use computational techniques to reveal the properties of the newest carbon allotrope,  and have discovered it to be an electron acceptor. Computer modeling reveals that an unusual ring-shaped molecule is the tiniest known electron acceptor made completely of carbon. Researchers used density functional theory, a common technique in quantum chemistry, to examine the structural and electronic properties of the molecule. Researchers were successful in virtually coupled cyclo[18]carbon with different molecular complexes and found that it easily accepted electrons from a variety of donor molecules.
