Scientists Reveal A New Mode Of Evolution

Whenever evolution and natural selection comes in our mind, we think of DNA. But now scientists have discovered a new method of evolution through molecules, not genes. Their research revealed that molecules, known as methyl groups, can alter the structure of DNA. They observed that organism yeast Cryptococcus neoformans has lost key genes for methylation about 50 to 150 million years ago. However,  the fungus still has methyl groups in its chromosomes. Scientists will carry further research to figure out how methylation works in C. neoformans, and whether this new form of evolution appears in other organisms.
