Scientists Identify A New Bent-toed Gecko Species in Cambodia

A new species of bent-toed gecko has been identified by biologist Thy Neang from Cambodia’s Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary. Biologists have described this finding as “extremely unexpected” and warned the species could be lost as suddenly as it was detected because of losing their habitat due to extensive gold mining. Scientists have named this reddish-brown gecko with grey stripes and distinctive yellow spots as Cyrtodactylus phnomchiensis. The geckos are related to the C irregularis family that includes at least 19 species over southern and central Vietnam, and southern Laos, eastern Cambodia. This unexpected discovery has added another amazing reptile species to science for Cambodia and the world.
