Scientists Captured How A Molecule Changes When It Absorbs Light

For the first time, scientists have been able to capture how the electron cloud of a molecule increases when it absorbs light. In processes such as photosynthesis and vision, the interaction between light and molecules plays a significant role. Scientists have been able to enable direct observation of the initial step of a light-driven reaction i.e rearrangement of its electrons using ultrafast x-ray scattering, shortly after the molecule absorbed a photon. Scientists consider this experiment path-breaking as they choose to move the molecule to a state where the atomic motion is small so that the signal is controlled by the force on the electrons.
