More than 24,000 people have been infected, and nearly 500 people have been killed in China, by a novel coronavirus. But scientists are still figuring out why so few children have been affected by the deadly disease. None of the infected people were younger than 15 since its outbreak on December 31. Doctors have registered only a handful of cases among children. Till now, a Chinese infant is the youngest case recorded so far. Scientists assume that children’s strong immune system is helping them to fight against the infection. However, health experts consider low count is good among children as good hygiene is critical to prevent the transmission of coronavirus and children are less likely to wash their hands, that can make them vulnerable to the virus.
