Satellite Mega Constellations Could Hamper Astronomers’ Ability To Spot Celestial Events

Astronomers have been raising their concerns about the impact of mega-constellations of satellites ever since they were first offered by the companies. Now, a new study by European Southern Observatory (ESO) has revealed that constellations of thousands of satellites from companies like SpaceX could restrict the ability of astronomers to detect ‘dangerous asteroids’.Some of these satellites are noticeable in the sky and will have the worst impact on those telescopes which are deployed for wide-field surveys of the night sky. These earth-based telescopes are important for spotting supernovae and potentially threatening asteroids. ESO says it would be appreciable if companies ensure they darken the satellites before ejecting them into orbit.
