Releasing Artificially-Infected Mosquitoes Could Help To Reduce Global Dengue Cases

Dengue is one of the major causes of death and severe illness among children in most of the Asian and Latin American countries. A latest study has revealed that infecting these mosquitoes with a type of naturally-occurring bacteria called Wolbachia could help to prevent the virus from replicating in the insect. After releasing these modified mosquitoes in extremely infected areas, they found a 70% reduction in the dengue cases. Researchers are now evaluating the cost-effectiveness of this method as most of the dengue patients are from lower-income nations.
