New Discovery Channel reality show to be shot in space

Discovery Channel has plans to start a new reality show in 2022. But the highlight here is that the show will be recorded in space. The reality show named “Who Wants to Be an Astronaut?” will have people competing to participate in the Axiom Space commercial mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The winner will get a chance to join the crew of the AX-2. Discovery says the competition is open to “individuals.” The registration form is already live on Discovery’s page. However, only the US residents can take part as of now. In addition to filling out the form, you need to send a short video.

Participants to undergo heavy training

“What does it take to win a desirable place in space? It will be arduous and only a select few will undergo a rigorous selection process,” the page reads. Contestants will have to go through several tests to ensure the attributes needed to be an astronaut.

Participants of the show will undergo training to qualify for the vacant seat on the mission. “Ultimately, the lucky candidate, who is believed to have the right things by a panel of expert judges, will pave his way for an adventure that little has done,” the statement added.

Ambitious Axiom missions lined up

The vehicle used for the AX-2 mission is yet to be decided, but it is believed that Axiom might turn to Elon Musk’s SpaceX for the spacecraft. It is also known that the series will also feature a kickoff for the homecoming.

NASA recently partnered with aerospace startup Axiom Space for a mission that will ferry 4 people to the International Space Station (ISS) by January 2022. Interestingly none of them will be a working astronaut.

Axiom has chosen its vice president, former NASA astronaut Michael López-Alegría, to lead the crew. The other three members are real-estate investor Larry Connor, Canadian investor Mark Pathy, and former Israeli fighter pilot Eytan Stibbe. Axiom is also aiming to build its own space station called AxStation, which will start operations as an extension to the ISS but will detach later.
