NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has witnessed another type of tantrum that the Sun can throw besides solar flares and coronal mass ejections, an explosive cosmic event called “forced magnetic reconnection.” This event usually occurs when plasma and tangled magnetic fields conflict. This Theory has been speculated for 15 years but never confirmed until now. The breakthrough could be very beneficial for understanding other arrangements such as Earth’s and planetary magnetospheres, other magnetized plasma sources, including trials at laboratory scales where plasma is highly diffusive and very difficult to regulate.
