Milky Way’s Warp Is Likely Due To Galactic Collision

A recent study from a Gia mission has revealed that the Milky Way is curved around the edges and that could have been caused by a collision with another, smaller galaxy, which is sending waves through ours. However, it’s still unclear which galaxy might be causing the waves and when the collision started. The potential contender is Sagittarius, a dwarf galaxy which is supposed to have burst through the Milky Way’s galactic disc many times in the past. Astronomers assume that Sagittarius will be slowly consumed by the Milky Way. Astronomers are now waiting for future analysis, based on the next data release of Gaia data that is scheduled for sometime later this year.
