Hummingbirds Can Detect Colours We Can’t Even Imagine

A new study has revealed that Hummingbirds pose the ability to spot at least eight colors that are undetectable to humans. Humans have three types of light-sensitive cones in their eyes, which allow them to see red, green, and blue. However, birds have four types of cone cells that help them to distinguish multiple colors. In an experiment, scientists set up two feeders in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, next to LED lights that displayed either visible or ultraviolet colors that seemed to be indistinguishable. The scientists observed that hummingbirds were able to differentiate between colors that looked identical to humans by using a fourth cone in their eyes that can detect UV light. Scientists are now planning for more rigorous experiments with more colors that could help us further test the limits of birds’ color observation.
