Canadian scientists have found a part of an ancient continent, which indicates that it was 10% bigger than previously estimated. Scientists were investigating diamond samples from Baffin Island, a glacier-covered landmass near Greenland, when they detected a piece of North Atlantic Craton. Cratons are considered as an ancient part of the Earth’s continental crust. The North American Craton extended from present Scotland to North America and split apart 150m years ago. The team used various analytical techniques for their findings including petrography, mineralogy, and thermobarometry. Scientists hope these samples will help them to reconstruct the shapes of ancient continents based on deeper, mantle rocks.
