Genome Sequence Of Water Lily Reveals Early Evolution Of Flowering Plants

An international team of researchers used high-throughput next-generation sequencing technology to read out the water lily’s genome and transcriptome. The sequencing aimed to understand the early evolution of all flowering plants. The sequencing allowed the researchers to collect the vast majority of the genome into 14 chromosomes and identify more than 31 thousand protein-coding genes. Scientists used molecular dating to evaluate the group of water lilies from other aquatic plants. Researchers also analyzed the genes in the water lily genome that are responsible for attractive color and fragrance.
