Fun Science Activity: Bake Your Ice Cream

Have you ever thought of surprising your kids with ice cream as a treat on their lunchboxes but wondered how they would get it to school before it melted? An insulated bag or a cooler packed with ice might keep your treat cool just long enough. Using the same principles, it is even possible to bake ice cream in a hot oven and have it come out still frozen! Most of us aren’t Michelin star chefs, so the thought of baking your own ice cream cake might seem awkward. However, this simple and interesting activity is perfect for your kids in the kitchen, and your little chefs can pitch in to help. No stove or oven required, just a perfect cold freezer to seal the deal.

The easy and engaging recipe can easily be accommodated to suit all dietary lifestyles while also tasting simply delicious. Kids and adults equally will fall in love with the cookie-based, ice cream-filled cake combination.

Supplies Required To Get Started

  • 3 large eggs
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream
  • 3 large cookies
  • Foil
  • Baking tray
  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer
  • Spoon

Steps Involved In Bake Your Ice Cream Activity

  • First of all, preheat the oven to 240 degrees Celsius. Make sure you help kids with the oven and make the meringue.
  • To prepare the meringue, first, separate the eggs. Now, place the three egg whites in a mixing bowl and whisk using a hand mixer. Once the egg whites stand in stiff peaks, add in the sugar a tablespoon at a time and continue to whisk until all the sugar is mixed in.
  • Cover a baking tray in foil.
  • Now, put the cookies on the foil. Place a scoop of ice cream on top of each cookie.
  • Wrap each cookie and the ice cream entirely with meringue.
  • Now, put the baking tray in the oven for around five minutes, until the meringue turned golden brown.
  • Finally, put them on a plate and eat them up!

Is the ice cream still cold? What do you believe keeps the ice cream cold even though it’s been in a hot oven for five minutes?

Why Didn’t The Ice Cream Melt?

The secret to keeping the ice cream cold is all in the meringue! Meringue is full of air bubbles which stop the heat from the oven reaching the ice cream! The meringue and sponge cake base always act as insulators confining the heat and stopping it melting the cold ice cream! Let your kids whip up dessert without heating up the oven and try this amazing mistake-proof activity!
