Mick Jagger has met his match in robot dog. Boston Dynamics’ Spot pulled off its Mick Jagger impression in a video paying its tribute to the Rolling Stones’ 1981 classic Start Me Up. The video shows the robot mimicking the dance and singing of Mick Jagger. But it doesn’t stop there; later an entire Spot-staffed version of the band performs on the rock classic.
This isn’t the first time Boston Dynamics’ robots have showcased their dancing skills, notably in a video with K-pop stars BTS. Apart from the fun activities, the robots are also involved in more serious work as medical workers.
Paying homage to the greatest rock band
The new video by Boston Dynamics pays homage to the Stones’ Tattoo You era. The band is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the band with a new version that includes tracks that were previously unreleased.
Spot will soon be helping with operations at Hyundai Motor plants in South Korea. Hyundai, which recently bought a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics, said the new robot dog will work in a local Kia plant and will survey areas remotely to help identify issues before they arise.
Spot to fix issues before they occur
For instance, the robot’s new thermal camera and 3D lidar can identify near machinery with high temperatures. In such cases, Spot will be able to pinpoint a fire hazard before anyone else can. It can be controlled remotely by human operators as well, and alert potential hazards to plant management.
Previously, the company released a video showing the robotics team’s work for Atlas’s skill set that allows the humanoid robot to move like us. The video also shows the team working on the humanoid robot Atlas as they make it more efficient by adding new features. The Atlas team’s main focus is parkour, a training regime that involves an obstacle course.
