Atomic Physicists Validate A 90-Year-Old Theory

The light imposes a specific amount of pressure on a body, however, when light particles knock an individual molecule and hit an electron, the molecule hops toward the light source. Now, atomic physicists from the Goethe University succeeded for the first time in estimating this effect using the COLTRIMS reaction microscope, confirming a 90-year-old theory. Physicists used X-rays at the accelerators DESY in Hamburg and ESRF in French Grenoble, to knock electrons out of helium and nitrogen molecules. The breakthrough will allow the physicists to now pose many more questions, such as what changes when the energy is diffused between two or more photons.
