Astronomers Have Detected The Most Powerful Supernova Ever

A team of astronomers has identified a supernova using data from Pan-STARRS that is about 4.5 million light-years away and has released about 10 times more energy than the sun will emit in its entire lifetime, making it the most powerful supernova ever detected. He and his collaborators found the supernova, named SN2016aps, using the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System in Hawaii. Researchers have discovered this more than three years ago, and think outbursts like this one could help us learn about the supermassive stars that may have survived in the early universe.
