A team of scientists from the ETH Zurich and ETH spin-off Inositec has found a new substance to block vascular calcification, which concerns many patients undergoing prolonged kidney disorder. Vascular calcification usually happens when calcium phosphate crystals are deposited in tissue. The new substance is structurally associated with inositol hexakisphosphate, also known as IP6. It often occurs naturally in legumes and cereals, IP6 binds phosphate and various minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. The ETH scientists are now keen to work with Inositec and third parties to simplify various points, such as drug security and the optimal dosage.
