A large Asteroid Totally Just Mooned Earth

A large asteroid was spotted rushing quickly through to Earth last week. As soon as it entered the earth’s space, astronomers at Arecibo Observatory’s Planetary Radar Science Group in Puerto Rico observed the asteroid 2020 BX12 closely. The space rock was found to be one of the largest ones that enter our environment in recent weeks, clocking in at 200 to 450 meters and moving around 90,000 kilometers per hour. The most exciting thing they noticed was that the asteroid has its very own moon just 70 meters across. 2020 BX12 belongs to the Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids that rotate between inside Earth’s orbit, and out past Mars. Astronomers are now hoping to capture more such moony asteroids to get detailed insights on them.
