New research based on data from NASA’s Juno mission launched in 2011 shows that water comprises approximately 0.25% of Jupiter’s atmosphere, which is far more than previously expected. At 93 miles below the top of the atmosphere, Juno collected more accurate information compared to NASA’s Galileo spacecraft at 75 miles in the 1990s, which suggested 10 times less water than scientists predicted.Researchers used an instrument called the Microwave Radiometer (MWR) to measure the atmosphere at multiple different depths which enabled them to get more accurate readings of the atmosphere. Juno is still in orbit around Jupiter and will make another flyby of the planet on April 10, 2020
