A new study has revealed that a million seabirds died in less than a year as a result of abnormally warm water in the Pacific Ocean known as the ‘Blob’ . Researchers from the University of Washington estimated that around 1 million murres birds, probably died of starvation between the summer of 2015 and the spring of 2016. The study concluded that warming ocean waters increased the metabolism of predatory fishes, causing a fight for survival over the limited supply of smaller fish, which likely starved the birds to death. The ocean heatwave blobs have become more common over the last century, and are supposed to further increase in frequency as the temperature warms up.
